Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, Native Seed and Seedling Development Program

Contact Information

Project objective is to allow Montana and the Dakotas BLM to have site adapted plant materials available of a wide variety of species. Plant materials will be provided while giving BLM maximum flexibility in how many seedlings are needed and which species will be planted. BLM would be able to supply small amounts of many species or large amount of few species as project conditions warranted and environmental conditions changed which species are available for collecting.

Funding Interests

The Bureau of Land Management?s (BLM) Native Plant Material Development Program was developed to allow the BLM to encourage private industry to develop partnerships with them to develop site specific, genetically appropriate plant materials for BLM projects.
They propose to enter into a long-term agreement to develop a supply of seedlings of native shrubs from seed that the BLM will provide from wild collected sources. The species and quantities to be grown will be extremely variable. The second phase of the project would expand the project to include seeds of native forbs and grasses. Since this would entail planting plant beds that would be in place for several years, a stable partnership and financial agreement is necessary to protect the investment of both parties.
