The California Farmland Conservancy Program (CFCP) seeks to encourage the long-term, private stewardship of agricultural lands through the voluntary use of agricultural conservation easements.

Funding Interests

The CFCP provides grant funding for projects which use and support agricultural conservation easements for protection of agricultural lands.

Grants are available for conservation easements, restoration projects and planning projects.

$60000 to $2200000

Requirements & Limitations


  • Eligible applicants include cities, counties, resource conservation districts, regional park or open-space districts as well as nonprofit organizations that hold a tax exemption as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and further qualify under Internal Revenue Code Sections 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) or 170(h)(3) (Public Resources Code Section 10221).
  • Easement grant applications must contain a match component of at least 5% of the value of the grant, or a landowner donation of at least 10% of the value of the easement.
  • Combinations of donations and match must be at least 10% of the value of the easement. Up to 50% of stewardship endowment contributions may be applied toward the match requirement.
  • Planning grant applications must include a match component of at least 10%.

    Applications may be submitted for consideration at any time.


    Applications may be submitted without a resolution of support from local government, provided that notice has been made to the appropriate local government at least 30 days prior to submission of the application. Neighboring landowners must still be notified at least 30 days prior to seeking the local governmental resolution of support.

    Grantee: Marin Agricultural Land Trust
    Amount: $1000000
    Purpose: Funding was given to assist the Marin Agricultural Land Trust with the purchase of an agricultural conservation easement on a historic 1,007 acre Nicasio Valley Ranch.

    Grant 2

    Grantee: Nature Conservancy<br>
    Amount: $

    Funding was given towards the purchase of a 221-acre easement on a vineyard in Sacramento County. The Nature Conservancy's goal is to create blocks of easement-encumbered agricultural properties to protect the larger Cosumnes River Preserve area from urban encroachment.
