Who's who at the Red Lodge Clearinghouse.
Lauren Ris, Project Manager Lauren provides overall project management for the Red Lodge Clearinghouse. She has a Master’s Degree in Natural Resource Policy and Conservation Biology from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. Her previous work has involved building partnerships and engaging in collaborative processes involving scientists, tribes, farmers, local governments and nonprofits and building consensus with these and other decision-makers on complex scientific, economic, and institutional issues. Lauren has worked in the federal government, academia, and for non-profit organizations. Kathryn Mutz, Project Oversight and Laws and Regulations Section Manager Kathryn is responsible for the content found in the "Laws" section of the Red Lodge Clearinghouse. She joined the professional staff of the Natural Resources Law Center in September 1996. Kathryn has a background in both law and natural resources management. She holds a B.A. in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1974, an M.S. in Biology/Ecology from Utah State University in 1979, and a J.D. from the University of Colorado in 1995, concentrating in natural resources and environmental law. For the twelve years prior to entering law school, she worked throughout the West for state and federal government and private industry on scientific and public policy issues related to natural resources development. As a biologist, she specialized in wetlands, endangered species, and reclamation of disturbed lands. More recently, her legal research has focused on environmental justice, forestry and mineral development. Her volunteer activities include the Colorado Riparian Association, the Communities Committee, the National Wildlife Federation's Tribal Lands Program, and Habitat for Humanity International. Mark Squillace, Project Supervisor Professor Mark Squillace is the Director of the Natural Resources Law Center at the University of Colorado Law School. Before coming to Colorado, Professor Squillace taught at the University of Toledo College of Law where he was the Charles Fornoff Professor of Law and Values. Prior to Toledo, Mark taught at the University of Wyoming College of Law where he served a three-year term as the Winston S. Howard Professor of Law. He is a former Fulbright scholar and the author or co-author of numerous articles and books on natural resources and environmental law. In 2000, Professor Squillace took a leave from law teaching to serve as Special Assistant to the Solicitor at the U.S. Department of the Interior. In that capacity he worked directly with the Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, on variety of legal and policy issues. Doug Kenney, Project Advisor Dr. Doug Kenney joined the professional staff of the Natural Resources Law Center in July 1996. He has a broad interdisciplinary background in natural resources, beginning with a B.A. in Environmental, Population and Organismic (EPO) Biology from the University of Colorado in 1987, an M.S. in Natural Resources Policy and Administration from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Renewable Natural Resource Studies from the University of Arizona's School of Renewable Natural Resources in 1993. Prior to joining the Center, he was employed as an independent consultant, primarily working on the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa and Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACT/ACF) River Basin study in the southeastern United States. Doug specializes in the analysis of institutional arrangements for the governance, administration, and field-level management and use of natural resources. Heidi Horten, Project Administrator Heidi provides editing and administrative services for the Red Lodge Clearinghouse. As the program manager for the Natural Resources Law Center, she is responsible for promoting Center activities and accomplishments, serving as liaison to the Advisory Board, and assisting the Director in developing Center programs. Her background in natural resources includes working for national environmental consulting firms where she served as project coordinator for water resources investigations, marketing and public relations manager for client development and interface, proposal and grant coordinator, and corporate Technical Editor. She has been editor for many committee reports including the National Research Council's Board of Mineral and Energy Resources Groundwater Resources in Relation to Coal Mining. Red Lodge Clearinghouse Scholars Students through University of Colorado's Law School and Environmental Studies program assist with research for the "Laws" section of the Web site as well as with finding relevant news stories and upcoming events. |
