Pygmy rabbits considered for federal protection PDF Print E-mail
The federal government said yesterday it will conduct a scientific review to determine whether the pygmy rabbit deserves protection as a threatened or endangered species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service review of the tiny rabbit -- the smallest in North America -- will look at California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming. The rabbits already are listed in Washington.

After the review, the agency will have three options: decide that protection is not necessary; decide that listing the rabbit as threatened or endangered is warranted, leading to a yearlong round of studies and comments; or decide the listing is warranted but precluded by higher-priority activities (AP/MSNBC.com, Jan. 8).
