An analysis done by the U.S. Forest Service and the University of Wisconsin found that, between 1990 and 2000, 61 percent of the homes built in Oregon, Washington and California--more than 1 million all told, were built in the wildland-urban interface, and according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, nearly 40 percent of the state's more than 12 million homes are on lands that are extremely fire prone.
