Utah needs to hold off on Snake Valley water deal with Nevada PDF Print E-mail

The chorus is growing, pleading with Gov. Gary Herbert to deep-six the proposed deal to divide the groundwater beneath Snake Valley between Nevada and Utah. It reportedly now includes some members of the Snake Valley Aquifer Advisory Council, a group created by state law to examine the issues. The governor should heed this call.

Montana has waited for nearly 30 years for new wilderness with nothing yet to show for it. When the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act passed in March, not a single acre of the 2 million acres newly designated as wilderness was located in Montana.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar reached the right decision last week when he put eight parcels of land near Arches and Canyonlands national parks, Desolation Canyon on the Green River and Nine Mile Canyon near Price off-limits to oil and gas drilling.
